What French words should a beginner learn first?
Start with greetings such as bonjour and merci, everyday verbs such as être and avoir, and useful phrases such as je voudrais. Add words for the situations you expect to use them in. This list groups 300 words and phrases by everyday use.
Are these the 300 most frequent French words?
This is a beginner selection from the Madeleine curriculum, not a statistical frequency ranking. It includes complete expressions as well as individual words. The groups help you find useful French for conversation, food, travel and daily life.
Can I listen to each word for free?
Yes. Each entry has lifelike French audio and an English meaning. Select the speaker beside an entry to hear it. The audio is generated with neural text-to-speech, as in the Madeleine app.
Where do the words and audio come from?
These are 300 early items from Madeleine's shipped curriculum, grouped here by topic. The French, English meanings and audio come from the same content used in the app. An entry's English meaning is a useful starting point; context can change how a word is used.
What do the m., f. and register labels mean?
The small m. and f. labels show noun gender. When you learn a noun, learn its article and a phrase with it too. Register labels identify formal, informal and vulgar expressions. Some everyday phrases use informal French: je sais pas means “I don't know”; the formal written form is je ne sais pas.
Will a word list make me fluent?
A word list can help you build vocabulary. Understanding and speaking French also need grammar, connected listening and conversation practice. Listen, recall the meanings and return to the words over time.
